• I always wondered how a post-Cold War NATO might react to armed conflict between member nations Greece and Turkey over Cyprus. Fortunately, the rivaly between Canada and Denmark over Hans Island seems to be taking place on the Internet. (Anyone know how to say "Miserable Failure" in Danish?)

• Visiting Springfield last week, I was interested to learn that Abraham Lincoln was the only U.S. President ever to hold a patent. (It was for a contraption to lift boats over shoals and was never manufactured.) At first I was skeptical, but after further investigation, it seems to be true. I thought that Thomas Jefferson would have been more likely to fit that bill, but I have since learned that he had a love/hate relationship with the concept of the patent itself. I wonder what Jefferson and/or Lincoln would think about things like this IHT piece on rethinking copyright law or the AAP suit against Google.
